It is usually important to know what colour the spores are in identifying a species. The best way to do this with a ‘mushroom’ or agaric, is to take a mature (but not old) cap and place it over two pieces of paper – one black and one white.

Left for a few hours it will make a ‘print’ allowing you to observe both the colour and the spacing of the gills.
