On wood in native forests. The caps, gills and stem of mature, fresh specimens are a distinctive wine-red. The cap soon dries out and the colour fades to paler wine-red. Lines of gills are visible through wet caps. There is a pale membranous ring on the stem.
Cap: 65mm dia, convex to flat. Gills: adnate, close, pale wine-red to maroon, Stem: central, sometimes twisted, tough, dry, Spores: red-brown.
